This snack might just be your new favourite guilty pleasure

Fancy drizzling some caramel or pouring some molten chocolate onto popcorn? This star fusion of sweet and savoury is finally coming of age, and has become popular as a go-to option for a quick munch.

This gourmet variety could be your perfect companion while watching movies. Crispy, crunchy, sugary and even nutty, caramel popcorn has a delicious taste. Moreover, it is low on cholesterol and doesn’t pose too much of a health risk.

What’s even better is the fact that you can make it at home, provided you have the right ingredients. Here’s how.

How to make caramel popcorn at home

Air-pop some corn on the stove or microwave it. In the meantime, separately add butter and brown sugar in a pan and let it melt. Stir it thoroughly until it mixes nicely and then put it on boil in medium heat.

Cook for an extra five minutes on a steady flame. You can then add a tablespoon or two of vanilla. Mix thoroughly for the flavour to come through.

Then add a pinch of baking soda and wait till it caramelizes entirely. This will prepare the coating, which you can then add to your tray of popcorn, ensuring that each kernel is covered.

Spread it out evenly on an aluminum foil or soak it on a tissue paper before serving.

You can store it too in an air-tight container as this popcorn lasts for three-four months or more, even at room temperature, depending on the storage.

Fun fact

National Caramel Popcorn Day is celebrated on 6 April each year in the US, paying tribute to snacking and the spirit of getting together, on the occasion of sports, fairs and festivals.
