While store-bought hair care products can be convenient and fuss-free, your kitchen has a gamut of surprisingly useful ingredients that can work wonders for your hair and scalp. Here are five DIY remedies for a healthy and shiny mane.

While egg itself is great for hair, add it to olive oil, and you have a super nutritious hair pack. This protein-rich strengthening and moisturizing mask makes hair healthy, soft and shiny and keeps scalp dryness at bay.

How to: Mix one egg with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and apply all over hair and scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes, wash it with a shampoo and conditioner.

Best for: Dry, damaged hair.

Cinnamon and coconut oil hair mask

This mask is great for those looking to check hair loss and get long, lustrous tresses. Cinnamon is known to have anti-microbial and antioxidant properties. Combined with the moisturizing properties of coconut oil, this mask can make your hair healthy and shiny.

Apple cider vinegar wash

If you have an itchy scalp and are plagued by dandruff, then this one’s for you. Apple cider has anti-bacterial properties that help fight scalp issues, such as dryness, itchiness and dandruff. The acidic nature of the vinegar can help remove excess grease and grime from your hair and restore the scalp’s natural PH balance, making your hair look healthy and shiny.

How to: Mix 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and 2 cups of water. After washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, apply this mixture on to your scalp and leave it on.

Yogurt and honey pack

Just like your body, your hair can also get dehydrated due to factors such as sun exposure, chemicals, use of hair styling equipment, hard water. This is when a yogurt and honey mask can come to the rescue.

While honey, being a natural humectant locks in the moisture, yogurt hydrates the hair. Together, they can combat dandruff, repair damage and strengthen your strands.

How to: Mix ½ cup of yogurt with ½ cup of honey. Gently massage it on your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it off with a mild shampoo and conditioner.

Best for: Dry and damaged hair.

Milk, olive oil and brown sugar scrub

You can’t have healthy hair without a healthy scalp. Much like your face and body, your scalp too needs exfoliation to unclog blocked pores and remove dead cells. This milk, olive oil and brown sugar scrub will help your scalp breathe, by removing excess oil, dirt, grime, product build-up, stimulate hair growth and de-stress you, all at the same time.

How to: Mix 2 tablespoons of raw milk, 4 tablespoons of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to form a paste. Using your fingertips, massage the paste gently on your scalp for a few minutes. Leave it on for 5 minutes and wash it off with shampoo.

Best for: All types of hair.
