Nobody wants to be near a person with body odour. And god forbid if you are the one! It can be very embarrassing indeed if your body odour forces people to stay away from you.

It is a common misconception that body odour is generated from sweat. In reality, sweat itself is odourless, but it goes rancid when bacteria feed on it. Moreover, hormonal imbalances, overeating and medical conditions such as diabetes can exacerbate the unpleasant smell in the body.

What causes body odour?

Factors like stress, ovulation and extreme emotion can lead to body odours. It is mainly caused by bacterial presence in the underarms, elbows and soles of feet.

Here are some easy home-made solutions to fight odour, which you can use instead of commercial products such as deodorants and perfumes.

Essential oils

Tea tree oil can be a good natural agent to keep body odour at bay, as long as it does not irritate your skin. Essential oils of lavender, pine or peppermint can leave behind a pleasant fragrance.

Green treatment

Sage oil, extracted from the leaves of the dried herb, can be effective in reducing perspiration. Another easy, DIY home remedy is to apply lemon juice in the smell-causing areas. It balances the pH level of the skin and also kills bacteria. For better results, mix it with a bit of honey.

A healthy diet

An easy hack to mask odour is to consume plenty of leafy vegetables. Veggies like spinach and parsley are good options, which  deodorize the body naturally. A healthy diet with fruits, yogurt and a balanced mix of proteins and carbs can also leave you smelling fresh, driving bad odours away.

Take frequent showers

There is no better alternative to get rid of body odour than taking showers more than once during the day. Use an anti-bacterial soap or shower gel and use it on all parts for an even cleansing.

Make sure you also wash your garments more than once a week to avoid odour seeping into your body. Wash them with gentle liquids to retain the quality of fabric and for you to stay fresh and fragrant whenever you wear them.
