A skincare routine involves three basic steps—cleansing, toning and moisturizing. And, most people often skip the step between cleansing and moisturizing—toning removes excess dirt, oil and impurities that your cleansing routine may have missed. It hydrates your skin and also works as a primer before you apply moisturizer and make-up on your face.

“It (toner) brings your skin back to its natural acidic state, sweeping impurities away and helping your skin absorb your skincare products,” Charlotte Cho, co-founder of Soko Glam, an online store that specializes in Korean beauty products, tells allure.com.

A good facial toner also helps balance your skin’s pH level, which may get affected due to application of soap and face wash. A toner should be part of your skincare routine at night too before you apply your cream.

Consider the skin type

An alcohol-free toner is any day milder on your skin than an astringent. It doesn’t dry out your skin and is suitable for all skin types. If you have an oily skin, go for a salicylic acid-based toner that exfoliates your skin gently.

For normal to dry skin, opt for a toner that keeps the skin hydrated. Toners that contain avocado, vitamin E can be ideal.

If you have sensitive skin, an alcohol-free toner with nourishing ingredients like aloe vera can work best. Avoid toners with harsh chemicals or even essential oils.

Pro-tip: Start your three-step skincare routine with a cleanser to remove dirt and grime. Then dab a cotton pad with toner and apply it gently on your skin. Finally, round it off with a hydrating moisturizer.
