Everyone loves a good hair day. But if you have dry, brittle and frizzy hair or hair that is snowing dandruff, it can be a source of anguish. Do not despair. A combination of right nutrition and proper grooming can help you tackle your hair woes and give you bouncy tresses.

There are a lot of hair-raising myths about what to do and what not to do when it comes to hair care. Let’s debunk some:

Myth: It is harmful to wash your hair frequently

Fact: Absolutely not. How frequently you choose to shampoo your hair is a decision that should solely depend on your hair type. If you have an oily scalp, then you can wash your hair every day, but if you have oily to dry hair, using a shampoo 2-3 times a week is fine. If your hair is very dry, you can shampoo it once a week. Use a conditioner every time you shampoo. Check the label of your shampoo to make sure that it is suitable for your hair type.

Myth: Only straight hair can look healthy and shiny

Fact: Not really. While it is true that straight hair does take on shine easily, but all hair types, with a proper diet and the right grooming products, can look lustrous. Oil your hair regularly, especially if you have dry to normal hair. Oiling nourishes your hair by improving the blood circulation to your scalp. Stick to a mild shampoo and a conditioner. Apply a serum to keep your hair tangle-free. Avoid using heat to dry your hair, instead let it dry naturally.

Myth: If I’m growing my hair, I should avoid cutting it until it reaches the desired length

Fact: Trim your hair once in 6-8 weeks to check split ends. It helps improve your hair health. If you have hair that is prone to split ends, use a leave-in conditioner on your hair tips after you shampoo your hair.

Myth: Natural colours like henna are not harmful for hair

Fact: All hair colour treatments can turn your hair brittle and dry. If used in excess, even henna can damage your hair. Avoid using henna on hair if you are prone to skin allergies for it may cause rashes. If you have coloured hair, opt for a colour-protecting shampoo with special conditioning agents. To avoid breakage, never brush wet hair.

Myth: Fine hair doesn’t need conditioner

Fact: Both hair and scalp need conditioning, irrespective of your hair type. Proper conditioning and using a shampoo especially formulated for your type of hair go a long way in keeping your mane healthy and strong.
