India cases and toll: India added 62,064 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 22,15,074, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India had recorded 64,399 cases of coronavirus the previous day.

India has 6,34,945 active cases of coronavirus while 15,35,743 people have recovered from the illness. In the last 24 hours, 1,007 people have lost their lives to the virus across the country. The country’s COVID-19 death toll has climbed to 44,386. On Sunday, a total of 4,77,023 tests for COVID-19 were conducted across India.

Andhra Pradesh registers record surge: On Sunday, Andhra Pradesh recorded 10,820 cases of coranavirus, a record single-day surge for the southern state. With this, the state’s coronavirus tally has climbed to 2,27,860—in terms of caseload, Andhra Pradesh is the third worst-hit state by the virus, after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

The state has 87,112 active cases of coronavirus while the recoveries stand at 1,38,712. The death toll has moved up to 2,036 with 97 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours. On Sunday, at least 10 COVID-19 patients were killed in a fire that broke out a hotel-turned-COVID facility in Vijayawada city of Andhra Pradesh.

Maharashtra records 12,000-plus cases again: For a second consecutive day, Maharashtra posted more than 12,000 cases of coronavirus. On Sunday, the western state registered 12,248 cases of coronavirus, taking the overall tally to 5,15,332. On Saturday, the state recorded 12,822 cases of coronavirus in the biggest single-day surge so far.

Maharashtra currently has 1,45,865 active cases of coronavirus against 3,51,710 recoveries. The state’s COVID-19 toll has climbed to 17,757 with 390 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.

COVID vaccine tracker: Russia is likely to get the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine registered on 12 August. The vaccine has been developed jointly by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian defence ministry. Medical experts, however, have questioned the speed at which the trials have been conducted for the vaccine.

Global corona update: The global coronavirus tally has climbed to 2,00,26,186 with 1,29,00,661 recoveries and 7,34,020 deaths, as per Worldometer. After the US, Brazil is now the second country to record more than 1 lakh COVID-19 deaths. The South American country has reported 1,01,136 deaths while the caseload has reached 30,35,582. The US, meanwhile, has crossed the 5-million or 50 lakh-mark for coronavirus cases. The country’s tally stands at 51,99,444 with 1,65,617 deaths.
