India crossed a grim milestone as it overtook Russia as the third worst-hit country by the coronavirus. Against India’s 6.97 lakh cases, Russia’s tally stands at 6.81 lakh. Only the US, which has recorded close to 30 lakh cases of coronavirus, and Brazil, with over 16 lakh cases, are ahead of India in terms of caseload. India cases and toll: India’s coronavirus count is inching close to the 7-lakh mark. On Monday, India’s tally increased to 6,97,413  confirmed cases. Of these, 2,53,287 are active, 4,24,432 recoveries and 19,693 deaths, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India added 24,247 fresh cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours even as 425 people succumbed to the disease. A total of 1,80,596 tests for COVID-19 were conducted on Sunday.

How is Tamil Nadu faring: Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu which was under an intense 17-day lockdown, will see an easing of some restrictions from Monday. Madurai, the temple city, however, will continue to be under lockdown till 12 July. After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu is the second state to record over 1 lakh cases of coronavirus. On Monday, the state’s COVID-19 tally stood at 1,11,151 cases—46,863 active cases, 62,778 recoveries and 1,510 deaths.

Where Delhi stands: The national capital is closing in on the 1-lakh mark. Delhi has 25,038 active cases while the number of recoveries has increased to 71,339 even as 3,067 people died because of the virus, taking the total count to 99,444 total confirmed cases. Delhi had recorded 2,244 fresh cases of coronavirus and 63 deaths on Sunday.

Maharashtra tops 2-lakh coronavirus cases: Maharashtra’s coronavirus tally continues to show an unrelenting surge, with the state adding 6,555 fresh cases of coronavirus on Sunday. The state’s COVID-19 count now stands at 2,06,619 cases with 86,057 active cases, 1,11,740 recoveries and 8,822 deaths. India’s financial and entertainment capital, Mumbai, reported 1,311 fresh cases of coronavirus and 69 deaths on Sunday. Mumbai alone has recorded 84,125 coronavirus cases so far.

Telangana and Karnataka add numbers in bulk: After Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Maharashtra, the southern states of Telangana and Karnataka are witnessing a spike in daily cases of coronavirus. Telangana on Sunday recorded 1,590 fresh cases of the infection, taking the state’s coronavirus tally to 23,902 cases. Neighbouring Karnataka reported 1,925 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday. With this, the state’s COVID-19 count has surged to 23,474 cases.

COVID-19 vaccine progress in India: After courting controversy over a hurriedly set deadline for a vaccine against COVID-19, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Sunday said that it has not set a 15-August deadline for the vaccine, according to a Mint report. In India, two experimental vaccines, Bharat Biotech’s COVAXIN and Zydus Cadila’s ZyCov-D, have got the nod for human clinical trials.   

Global corona update: The global coronavirus tally has climbed to 1,15,62,559 cases with 65,37,723 recoveries and 5,36,837 deaths, according to worldometer, a website that tracks the spread of the infection globally. The United States has so far recorded 29,82,928 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 1,32,569 deaths, the highest in the world.     

Mexico, which is emerging as a new COVID-19 hotspot, has 2,56,848 cases of coronavirus. The country has reported 30,639 deaths due to the virus, which is more than what Spain (28,385 deaths), one of the worst-hit countries in Europe, reported.
