Corona Updates You Must Track: India COVID-19 Tally Crosses 7-Lakh Mark, Delhi Tops 1 Lakh Cases

After overtaking Russia as the country with the third highest number of coronavirus cases globally, India’s tally on Tuesday crossed the 7-lakh mark even as the death toll climbed to over 20,000. In just four days, India’s coronavirus tally went up from 6 lakh to 7 lakh cases. The all-India positivity rate for the infection is 6.73 per cent.

India cases and toll: India’s coronavirus count rose to 7,19,665 cases on Tuesday, breaching the 7-lakh mark. There are 2,59,557 active cases while 4,39,947 people have recovered from the illness, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The death toll has climbed to 20,160, with 467 people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours. India reported 22,252 fresh cases of coronavirus on Monday. The recovery rate for the infection is now over 60 per cent. India conducted 2,41,430 tests for COVID-19 on Monday.

Delhi crosses 1-lakh mark: After Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, Delhi crossed the 1-lakh mark for total coronavirus cases. This makes Delhi the first city in the country to achieve the grim milestone. Of the 1,00,823 confirmed cases so far, Delhi has 25,620 active cases and 72,088 recoveries. A total of 3,115 people have succumbed to the disease in the national capital.

On the bright side, in the last 24 hours, Delhi has recorded 1,379 fresh cases of coronavirus, a significant dip from the 2,244 cases recorded the previous day. The number of deaths for the day has also reduced to 48, from 63 the day before. With testing ramped up, Delhi’s positivity rate (number of people who test positive for the infection out of the total people tested) has declined to 10 per cent, from 30 per cent a few weeks ago.

Where Maharashtra stands: Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state by the coronavirus pandemic in terms of total cases recorded so far. On Tuesday, the western state’s coronavirus tally stood at 2,11,987—87,699 active cases, 1,15,262 recoveries and 9,026 deaths. In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra recorded 5,368 fresh cases and 204 deaths. As part of unlocking the state’s economy, the Maharashtra government is likely to allow hotels to reopen in a phased manner.

Telangana, Karnataka under spotlight: The southern states of Telangana and Karnataka are emerging as new hubs for the coronavirus disease. Both states reported more fresh cases of coronavirus on Monday than Delhi. Telangana recorded 1,831 new cases of the infection, taking the state’s tally to 25,733. Karnataka added 1,843 new coronavirus cases to its tally which has climbed to 25,317.

Global corona update: The coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on countries across the globe. The case tally on Tuesday stood at 1,17,44,397 with 67,40,096 recoveries and 5,40,764 deaths, as per Worldometer, a website that tracks the global spread of the infection.

The US and Brazil lead the table with 30,40,833 and 16,26,071 confirmed coronavirus cases, respectively. Mexico, which has been recording fresh cases and deaths due to COVID-19 at an alarming rate, is now at number nine, globally, in terms of total cases of coronavirus. The country has recorded 2,61,750 coronavirus cases and 31,119 deaths till Tuesday morning.
