India cases and toll: India reported 52,050 cases of coronavirus on Monday, taking the tally to 18,55,745. Of the total caseload, 5,86,298 are active cases, besides 12,30,509 recoveries and 38,938 fatalities, according to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The country recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases globally on Monday, going past the US, which recorded 47,511 new cases and Brazil, which saw 25,800 fresh cases, according to an India Today report.   

In the last 24 hours, 803 people succumbed to the disease across India. A total of 6,61,892 COVID-19 tests were conducted on Monday.

Guidelines for gyms and yoga institutes: The Health Ministry, on Monday, issued guidelines before gyms and yoga institutes reopen on 5 August (Thursday). Thermal screening and placing a sanitizer at the entrance are mandatory. Only those wearing face covers or masks will be allowed entry. Equipment must be disinfected and oxygen saturation levels have to be checked prior to exercise. “Those having oxygen saturation below 95% should not be allowed to exercise. Call central/state helpline/ambulance and refer such persons to the nearest health facility,” the guidelines state. 

Uttar Pradesh shows steady rise: Even as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh continue to grapple with a large number of new coronavirus cases every day, Uttar Pradesh too is showing a steady upward trend in its COVID-19 tally which is inching close to the 1-lakh mark. On Monday, the state recorded 4,441 cases of coronavirus—UP’s coronavirus caseload has climbed to 97,362 including 1,778 deaths.

West Bengal issues new lockdown schedule: On Monday, the Bengal government, for the fourth time, revised the schedule for the biweekly lockdown, which is in place till 31 August. This time, all Sundays have been kept out of the lockdown schedule. Now, the state will observe complete lockdown on 5, 8, 20, 21, 27, 28 and 31 August. On Monday, Bengal recorded 2,716 cases of coronavirus and 53 deaths. The state’s COVID-19 tally now stands at 78,232 cases.     

Global corona update: As per Worldometer, the global COVID-19 tally has surged to 1,84,46,766 with 1,16,77,723 recoveries and 6,97,222 deaths. Currently, there are 60,71,821 active cases of coronavirus, including 64,624 critical cases. The US is leading the global tally with 48,62,174 cases of coronavirus and 1,58,929 deaths, followed by Brazil, which has recorded 27,51,665 cases so far, including 94,702 deaths.

Along with Mexico, which has recorded 4,43,813 cases of coronavirus with 48,012 deaths, Colombia too is showing a steady surge in the number of cases. On Tuesday morning, the South American country’s COVID-19 caseload stood at 3,27,850, which includes 11,017 deaths. Colombia is now the 10th worst-hit country by the virus.
