Helmet is arguably the most important component of a safety gear when you are riding a motorcycle. Yet, it remains rather low on the list of priorities for many motorbike riders.

In many cases, fatal injuries to the motorists could have been avoided had they worn proper helmets.  “Motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than the drivers of passenger cars. Wearing an appropriate helmet improves their chances of survival by 42 per cent and helps avoid 69 per cent of injuries to riders,” said a 2016 study published by the United Nations.

The law in India stipulates that any person riding a motorcycle, including the pillion rider, should wear a helmet. Always look for the ISI mark on a helmet for quality. In addition to that, here are some other things you should consider when buying a helmet:

Style and fit

There are different types of helmets—full face, half face, open face, modular among others. Choose a helmet that fits your head. An oversized or a very tight helmet may not serve your purpose. Ideally, you should measure your head’s circumference (above your eyes) and then look for a helmet that fits you. Remember that different helmet brands have different size charts so it is always better to try it on before making a purchase.

Safety

Check the helmet for toughness. Its outer shell should be sturdy and able to protect you from a sudden impact. The impact absorber inside the shell, typically made of polystyrene foam, should be of good quality so that it can absorb shock. The padded layer on which your head rests should be comfortable. The chin strap should be adjustable and easy to use.

Also, see to it that the helmet lets you breathe as you may get stuck in a traffic jam and spend hours on the road. Go for a well-ventilated helmet which is sturdy and safe.
