Be it camping or a casual getaway, a backpack can be an ideal companion, in ways more than one. However, it’s advisable to remember the features, the size and the capacity of the bag before embarking on a trip. Your choice of backpack for a particular outing should ideally be determined by the length of your trip and the bulk you want to carry. For instance, some backpacks come with sleeping bags and equipment for setting a tent, which makes them ideal for camping/hiking adventures.

To better organize your journey and make it a smooth-sailing experience, here are a few tips to help you pack just right.

Choose the right volume

Volume, usually measured in litres, refers to how much space the bag packs in. You could select a small daypack or a full-sized model based on your requirement. Go for a lightweight camping gear if you are looking for easy movement. For an overnight trip, usually 30 to 50 litres of backpacking space should suffice.

Minimize backpacking

Keep the packing light and minimal. A compact gear comprises only the bare necessities. Make sure you don’t burden your back too much lest you end up with a painful experience, or worse, injure yourself.

Traditional backpacking

For those in the habit of carrying things and personal belongings around during your excursions, a bigger backpack is recommended. Moreover, if you are planning a tour to a colder place, keep in mind that you’ll need to pack your sweaters and woollen wear too, which inevitably add to the weight of your luggage.

Check the strap support

While wearing the backpack, check if the straps support the top and back of your shoulders. Ensure that it’s a proper fit with as little space between the bag and the body; otherwise, it may be difficult to carry it around. Also, carefully check the quality of padding used in the backpack, particularly in the straps. Remember: a good-quality strap makes for a comfortable, pain-free journey.
