Be it for birthdays, house parties or Christmas gatherings, cookies are meant to be savoured. They are great companions for your evening tea or coffee as well—and with the right recipes, they can be quite healthy too.

The word cookie comes from the Dutch term koekje or koekie, meaning little cake.It is believed to have originated in Persia in the 7th century CE and then spread to Europe by the 14th century. By the 17th century, it had arrived in the United States, and its different varieties became extremely popular over the next 100 years.

Cookies can be crispy, chewy or can simply melt in your mouth depending on the method of preparation and the ingredients used.

Types of cookies

  •  Shortbread cookies, in their current form, were arguably invented in Scotland. They are crumbly in texture and slightly less sugary than your typical sugar cookies. Conversely, they are richer in taste due to the butter that goes into the making.
  • If you love oats, oatmeal cookies could just be your thing. If you are baking them at home, you can add raisins, cinnamon and nutmeg, making it a healthy snack filled with fibre and minerals like calcium and magnesium, which are good for your bone health and muscle and nerve function.
  • Gingersnap cookies are another perennial favourite. Besides bringing a refreshing zing to the table, these cookies are loaded with the goodness of ginger. Ginger has proven anti-inflammatory properties, and can help reduce or cure nausea. It is good for the heart too.
  • And then there’s the ubiquitously popular chocolate-chip cookie. If you are looking to make a batch at home, you can use dark chocolate too. You can dunk these cookies in plain milk or simply binge-eat them without any accompaniment.
  • If you want to try a different flavour, you could try peanut butter cookies. For those planning to bake them at home, you can add a dash of grated almonds to take the flavour quotient a notch higher.

Word of advice: Since these cookies are high in sugar content and, therefore, calories, it’s best to not go overboard.
